Council-Wide Results
NOTE: Three wards were uncontested, meaning no vote was held. This will impact vote share significantly, with a higher Conservative but lower Green and Alba shares guaranteed. The uncontested wards were Barraigh agus Bhatarsaigh, Sgìr’ Ùige agus Carlabhagh and Sgìre an Rubha. The first two required by-elections due to vacancies.
Significant boundary changes to the isles creating smaller wards with the provisions in the Islands Act allowing them to be two-member, and reducing the number of councillors by two, didn’t prevent a shocking trio of uncontested wards from arising. Two of those will need immediate by-elections to fill vacancies. Democratically speaking, a concerning situation to arise.
In terms of contested seats, in keeping with islands tradition, Independents were overwhelmingly dominant, though dropping three seats to 20 (after by-elections this will likely be 22). The SNP nonetheless retained a group of 6 councillors, down one due in part to a retirement in Barraigh agus Bhatarsaigh and not standing a replacement.
The Conservatives also held their seat by default due to being in an undercontested ward. Both the Greens and Alba had incumbent defecting councillors standing in the same ward, with the Greens coming much closer to success but not quite getting there, making this the only (Highlands and) Islands council they are absent from.
Uncontested wards aside, more happily after achieving notoriety for failing to elect a single woman in 2017, two women were returned as councillors this time. CNES is still one of, if not the, most male-dominated councils in Scotland, but progress is progress.
Administration
As a majority-Independent council, it can be assumed an Independent administration will be formed. The following chart does not necessarily reflect the actual composition of that administration, and simply treats Independents as a single bloc.
Interactive Map
What English speakers may refer to as Western Isles Council is formally and legally rendered as Comhairle nan Eilean Siar, in recognition of Gaelic’s continued strong role in the islands. Stornoway on the Isle of Lewis is a sizeable town and the local political centre, but otherwise the population is quite widely dispersed through the chain. Historically the isles were split between two counties, with Lewis part of Ross and Cromarty, and everywhere else Inverness-shire, before being granted a unified council in 1973.
Politically, the isles are notable for being the smallest constituency of the UK parliament, and for giving the SNP their first ever seat won at a general election. They’d been Labour for decades before the SNP won the seat in 1970. Labour would regain the seat in 1987 and hold it until 2005. The identical Holyrood seat similarly started out in Labour hands, going SNP in 2007.
Since the creation of the local islands council, Independents have always been in the majority. In fact it wasn’t until 1994 they had party-affiliated councillors at all. In the final three FPTP elections, both Labour and the SNP had representatives, though Independents remained dominant.

⚪Independent: Kenneth MacLean
Only one candidate was nominated for the two seats available in this ward. As a result, that candidate was elected unopposed. Due to the heavily Independent nature of Islands councils, we can reasonably assume an Independent would have been elected at a contested vote, but it is impossible to know if MacLean in particular would have been successful.
A by-election was held on the 30th of June 2022 to fill the vacant seat.

As the number of candidates nominated in Sgìre an Rubha was equal to the number of seats available, all candidates were elected unopposed and no vote was held.
Based on 2017 results, as both were incumbent Independents, they would have had a reasonable chance of being elected regardless. However, it is impossible to be certain if one or both would have been had the ward been contested. As no vote was held, the candidates are listed as elected in alphabetical order.
If you’re unsure about what any of this data means, a quick explanation is given in this piece.

Na Hearadh By-Election: Context
Independent Councillor Grant Fulton resigned as a result of his unhappiness at the way the council was run. Note that as this by-election was fought on the same day as the UK General Election, it had an abnormally high turnout.
