Ballot Box Briefing #2 – Scandinavian Style Proportional Representation

Folk who’ve been following Ballot Box Scotland’s output for a while will have noticed the regular appearance of a hypothetical “Scandinavian Style Electoral System”, most commonly as a projection for Scottish Parliament polls. Giving it the depth of explanation it deserves seemed an obvious topic for the second Ballot Box Briefing.

Ballot Box Briefing #1 – Public Funding for Political Parties

Political parties play a vital role in our democracy. Despite this essential status, parties face a very uneven playing field in terms of funding. An easy solution to this would be to provide a substantial portion of party funding from the public purse. The first of these Ballot Box Briefings takes a look at this thorny issue.

Eilean a’ Cheò By-Election Result

The second by-election of the decade took us on our fourth visit to Highland Council since BBS launched, and their fifth by-election since the full council in 2017.

Clackmannanshire East By-Election, 19/11/20

Delayed at the very last minute from March, a strong Conservative lead here in 2017 won’t weather an SNP result akin to Ellon this time. A complete toss up.

We haven’t actually had a full Survation poll since March last year, so this is a welcome bit of diversity in terms of polling agencies.

Conservative – 24
Labour – 24
Green – 9
Lib Dem – 8

Mid Galloway and Wigtown West By-Election Result

For the very first Scottish election of the decade, we were down in Dumfries and Galloway. The stonking Conservative figure means this is the first single-seat by-election since Ballot Box Scotland launched two years ago where the winner did so on first preferences.

The scenes we saw in Glasgow earlier this week, as racists took to the streets to intimidate and threaten ethnic minority Glaswegians were despicable, and this afternoon we showed a tiny, outnumbered crowd of bigots that we don't want their hatred in our city.

Edinburgh by-elections due on the 3rd of September. In 2022, Labour beat Greens by 2% after transfers. Given what happened last month, Greens should surely be ahead. If they win, that'd be only their second by-election win ever. Curveball: Lib Dems have a formidable local machine.

By-Election Preview: Larkhall (South Lanarkshire) 9th of July 2026

A by-election in a staunchly Pro-Union part of the country is a huge opportunity for Reform to score a win, though Labour will benefit more from SNP transfer flows.

By-Election Preview: Peterhead South and Cruden (Aberdeenshire) 2nd of July 2026

A messy vote in a historic SNP heartland, where the Conservatives made stunning inroads post-IndyRef, and Reform lead on one of the votes last month. A tossup between all three, then?

Similarly you can follow in real time via an official website in Peru as Keiko Fujimori inches ever closer to a potential fourth absolutely razor thin defeat in a row...

Sorry but if a country on track for it's 10th President in as many years can run such an official platform what's our excuse?
