Helensburgh and Lomond South (Argyll & Bute) By-Election, 18/03/2021

The other Argyll and Bute by-election taking place on the 18th of March is a Lib Dem vacancy that’s most likely to go to the Conservatives.

Baillieston (Glasgow) By-Election, 18/03/2021

The shock disqualification of one of the city’s longest serving Labour councillors has prompted this by-election which the SNP are runaway favourites to win.

Isle of Bute (Argyll & Bute) By-Election 18/03/2021

One of two Argyll & Bute by-elections, both sadly following the death of a councillor, Bute will be a tough competition between the SNP, Conservatives and a strong local Independent.

Leaderdale and Melrose (Borders) By-Election, 11/03/2021

Prompted by the sad passing of the local SNP councillor Kevin Drum, this by-election looks most favourable for the Conservatives. However, always keep an eye on Independents when in a big rural council like the Borders!

Livingston South (West Lothian) By-Election, 11/03/2021

The departure of a very long-serving SNP councillor has this ward as a knife-edge contest between his party and Labour. By-election demographics might favour Labour, recent polling the SNP.

Aird and Loch Ness (Highland) By-Election, 11/03/2021

The first of a trio of by-elections due on the 11th, the untimely passing of the Conservative councillor here results in a highly unpredictable competition. Could go any of Con/SNP/Ind/LD!

Perth City By-Election Results

We finished off 2020’s by-elections with two in Perth – an SNP blowout in the North, and the Lib Dems emerging triumphant from the three-way scrap in South.

Clackmannanshire East By-Election Result

What had been three expected by-elections became one at the last minute, which saw the Conservatives emerge victorious on a rare win by first preferences alone.

Craigentinny/Duddingston (Edinburgh) By-Election Result

An easy SNP victory in this ward, though without the bump in support current polling might have suggested. Instead, the Greens and Lib Dems were the parties picking up big increases in support.

Kincorth/Nigg/Cove (Aberdeen) By-Election Result

A foregone conclusion for the SNP, perhaps the most interesting part of this by-election is that it raises the possibility Labour may lose their seat here in 2022, allowing the return of the 2012-17 Independent councillor Andy Finlayson.

As Conservative candidate and now MP, Douglas Lumsden, is also an MSP for the North East, he will have to resign from Holyrood within 49 days. That will bring in James Adams as his party replacement, as the only new Conservative MSP. This will also make Holyrood majority (65) new vs returning MSPs.

Polls are about to close for the two Westminster by-elections in Scotland (also, apparently, there's one in England as well, but honestly, who cares about that one... ... ... ... ...); results will come tonight but I've not taken tomorrow off day job so BBS will not be reporting figures live, sorry!

Two Westminster by-elections in Scotland today. Arbroath and Broughty Ferry is on paper the more marginal but in reality the way the vote was divvied up in 2024, with a now re-collapsed Labour then in close second, means it's likely a safer bet for Stephen Gethins' successor as SNP candidate.
