GE19 – Bring on the By-Elections

For something a bit less numerically minded today, let’s look at one of the common consequences of parliamentary elections – council by-elections.

Aberdeen and Moray Council By-Election Results, 21/11/19

We bring our busy November to a close with two by-elections in the former Grampian (gone but not forgotten) region. With the general election looming ever closer, I again remind folk that these are not predictive of results for MP seats that could see turnout twice as high.

Fife and Inverness Council By-Election Results, 14/11/19

November’s flurry of council by-elections hit its peak this week, with three by-elections. With a General Election looming, I remind readers not to hook too many theories about the national situation on the shoogly peg of a handful of local by-elections.

Shetland Council By-Election Results

Everyone may be focused on the Westminster General Election right now, but local democracy stops for nothing. For people desperate to foolishly attempt to read national runes from local by-elections, Shetland Islands Council’s Independent tendencies are going to leave you pretty disappointed.

Keith and Cullen (Moray) By-Election, 21/11/19

The next in our sudden spate of by-elections is up in Moray, where Independent Councillor for the Keith and Cullen Ward Ron Shepherd has announced his resignation. Shepherd has served a solid two decades on the council, having originally been elected in 1999.

Fife Council By-Elections, 14/11/19

It wasn’t enough just for Shetland to give us double dunter by-elections this year, as Fife has also swooped in with plans to hold two by-elections at once – also in neighbouring wards.

New Scotland Only Westminster poll, Norstat 27-29 May (vs 27-30 Apr):

    SNP ~ 34% (+5)
    RUK ~ 17% (-1)
    LAB ~ 16% (-3)
    CON ~ 10% (-4)
    GRN ~ 10% (+2)
    LD ~ 9% (-1)

No Holyrood figures in this (for a mercy from my perspective of "do I have the time"...)

Peterhead South and Cruden by-election on the 2nd of July has four of the Holyrood parties (no Labour or Green), plus two Independents and the Family party. This could be a very interesting one to watch, given most of the ward is in the Banffshire and Buchan Coast Holyrood constituency...

As part of the ongoing Ballot Box Scotland crusade against deposits (which has been going on since the project was set up in 2018!), I've made a very, very, VERY simple example of what a signature based system of ballot access could look like instead from a voter's perspective

    SP26: Switching up the System

Following the most disproportionate result in Holyrood's history, it's high time we started thinking about how to do things differently, and what would be most effective.
