By-Election Result: Clydebank Waterfront

The SNP survive a big swing against them as Labour slump to third place behind surging Reform.

By-Election Preview: Clydebank Waterfront (West Dunbartonshire) 15th of May 2025

Capping off complete coverage of Clydebank over one year, changed circumstances make the prospect of a Labour hat trick look rather remote.

By-Election Result: Kilpatrick

An easy Labour win in one of their strongest wards, though with Reform seeming to dine largely on their vote rather than almost unaffected Conservatives.

By-Election Preview: Kilpatrick (West Dunbartonshire) 28th of November 2024

Labour should pull off an easy victory in one of their strongest wards, but the context of the administration collapsing over some sublimely petty local beef adds some fun and flavour nonetheless.

By-Election Result: Clydebank Central

A by-election arising from deeply unsavoury behaviour should have been an easy SNP win if times were good for them. Since they weren’t, it was instead an unsurprising Labour victory.

By-Election Preview: Clydebank Central (West Dunbartonshire) 13th of June 2024

A by-election arising in utterly vile circumstances would at any other time be an easy SNP win, but under current conditions it’s Labour with the advantage.

Wards Worth Watching: West Dunbartonshire

Expect West Dunbartonshire to remain a hard fought SNP-Labour battleground. A local socialist party add some further flavour to what is the Conservative’s weakest mainland council.

For many LGBT folk like me, and especially trans folk, Keir Starmer will be remembered in the same way as Margaret Thatcher: with deep contempt for having overseen a deeply hostile, queerphobic government, which rolled back human rights and set society back by at least a decade.

    Good riddance.

By-Election Result: Arbroath and Broughty Ferry

The least exciting of the three by-elections that took place on Thursday, from a Scottish perspective it's the one closest to (but still not actually) a useful national barometer.

    By-Election Result analysis: Aberdeen South

A high profile move from Westminster to Holyrood leads to an absolutely huge loss for the SNP, as the Conservatives play a blinder of a tactical campaign.

As Conservative candidate and now MP, Douglas Lumsden, is also an MSP for the North East, he will have to resign from Holyrood within 49 days. That will bring in James Adams as his party replacement, as the only new Conservative MSP. This will also make Holyrood majority (65) new vs returning MSPs.
