The continued toxicity of Reform UK to other party’s voters has them fail to convert a first preference lead into a victory, with the Conservatives taking the seat instead.

The departure of an Independent with decades of service in an area the Conservatives have been falling to bits may open the door for Reform’s first Scottish victory.

An expected Conservative victory nonetheless bucks national polling trends, with the party gaining ground at the expense of the SNP and Labour despite collapse elsewhere.

2022 has had a fair spate of accidental councillors, leading in this case to a silent exit by the Labour councillor, giving the Conservatives a strong chance at picking up a third seat.

For the very first Scottish election of the decade, we were down in Dumfries and Galloway. The stonking Conservative figure means this is the first single-seat by-election since Ballot Box Scotland launched two years ago where the winner did so on first preferences.
