A Dundee double for the SNP proved a complete shocker for Labour in a ward they should have found easy pickings given the current political climate.

The resignation of the leader of the only SNP majority council in Scotland risked being a blow for the party; yet in a stunning double win off the back of a Labour fumble and Lib Dem gains, that majority emerged stronger.

The departure of the council leader leaves the SNP’s majority hanging in the balance, with their best hope of preserving it to upend over a decade of electoral strategy and abandon the other by-election as lost.

The sad passing of a Labour councillor is likely to be followed by the election of a party colleague, as a narrow SNP lead in 2022 is unlikely to weather the political changes since.
