By-Election Result: Glenrothes West and Kinglassie

An absolutely dire result for Labour bodes ill for their chances in May, and not just because their share of the vote was cut in half.

By-Election Preview: Glenrothes West and Kinglassie (Fife) 22nd of January 2026

Glenrothes has long been a strong patch for the SNP, and with Labour’s current difficulties Reform may end up their true competitors here.

By-Election Preview: Buckhaven, Methil and Wemyss Villages (Fife) 6th of November 2025

Another by-election in criminally grim conditions, Labour’s chances of beating the SNP may hinge on just how much transfer-unwilling Reform voters eat into their share.

By-Election Result: Glenrothes Central and Thornton

The SNP manage an easy win against a collapsing Labour party that, given its complete capitulation in the face of a hate campaign targeting a minority, deserves to lose hard at the moment.

By-Election Result: West Fife and Coastal Villages

Another Labour win in a seat they really shouldn’t have struggled with, in what turned out to be one of the blandest by-elections of the year, with very little in the way of swings one way or the other.

By-Election Preview: West Fife and Coastal Villages (Fife) 28th of November 2024

Another by-election in a series of “Labour vacancies in wards they won in single-seat terms in 2022”, which is therefore going to be another Labour victory.

Wards Worth Watching: Fife

Two things seem certain in Fife – firstly, that the SNP will remain in the lead, and secondly that the Lib Dems will remain dominant in North East Fife. What happens in terms of seats is less clear, with few obvious prospects for SNP and Labour gains against likely weakened Conservatives.

Fife and Inverness Council By-Election Results, 14/11/19

November’s flurry of council by-elections hit its peak this week, with three by-elections. With a General Election looming, I remind readers not to hook too many theories about the national situation on the shoogly peg of a handful of local by-elections.

Fife Council By-Elections, 14/11/19

It wasn’t enough just for Shetland to give us double dunter by-elections this year, as Fife has also swooped in with plans to hold two by-elections at once – also in neighbouring wards.

For many LGBT folk like me, and especially trans folk, Keir Starmer will be remembered in the same way as Margaret Thatcher: with deep contempt for having overseen a deeply hostile, queerphobic government, which rolled back human rights and set society back by at least a decade.

    Good riddance.

By-Election Result: Arbroath and Broughty Ferry

The least exciting of the three by-elections that took place on Thursday, from a Scottish perspective it's the one closest to (but still not actually) a useful national barometer.

    By-Election Result analysis: Aberdeen South

A high profile move from Westminster to Holyrood leads to an absolutely huge loss for the SNP, as the Conservatives play a blinder of a tactical campaign.

As Conservative candidate and now MP, Douglas Lumsden, is also an MSP for the North East, he will have to resign from Holyrood within 49 days. That will bring in James Adams as his party replacement, as the only new Conservative MSP. This will also make Holyrood majority (65) new vs returning MSPs.
