By-Election Preview: Kilmarnock North (East Ayrshire) 20th of February 2025

A second Killie by-election much harder for Labour to win than the first: if their swing there was replicated, the SNP would still win this one.

By-Election Preview: Kirkintilloch East, North and Twechar (East Dunbartonshire) 13th of February 2025

The last of our Councillor to MP by-elections, the Lib Dems are starting a quite distant third, but that hasn’t stopped them pulling off big wins before.

By-Election Preview: Bannockburn (Stirling) 23rd of January 2025

The sad passing of a Labour stalwart with 44 years experience leaves Labour at risk of being left with a credibility-stretching 4 (of 23) councillor administration.

By-Election Preview: Shetland North (Shetland) 23rd of January 2025

The resignation of an accidental and not entirely willing Labour councillor gives voters in Shetland North the option to vote after they didn’t get to do so in 2022.

By-Election Preview: Colinton and Fairmilehead (Edinburgh) 23rd of January 2025

A double by-election arises from some of the most outrageous(ly funny) circumstances, as November’s by-election winner quit the following week.

By-Election Result: Partick East and Kelvindale (2024)

Labour secure an easy victory in one of Glasgow’s least-SNP favourable wards, whilst the Greens endure a second surprisingly poor showing in a strong ward on a day they grew in a weaker ward elsewhere.

Labour’s recent struggles to deliver big swings after transfers see the SNP getting a breather with a currently rare by-election victory.

By-Election Result: West Fife and Coastal Villages

Another Labour win in a seat they really shouldn’t have struggled with, in what turned out to be one of the blandest by-elections of the year, with very little in the way of swings one way or the other.

By-Election Result: Kilpatrick

An easy Labour win in one of their strongest wards, though with Reform seeming to dine largely on their vote rather than almost unaffected Conservatives.

By-Election Result: Maryhill

Labour cap off a Glasgow hat trick with a notional gain on the SNP versus 2022, but an embarrassing result for the Greens, failing to make headway in a key 2027 target.

As Conservative candidate and now MP, Douglas Lumsden, is also an MSP for the North East, he will have to resign from Holyrood within 49 days. That will bring in James Adams as his party replacement, as the only new Conservative MSP. This will also make Holyrood majority (65) new vs returning MSPs.

Polls are about to close for the two Westminster by-elections in Scotland (also, apparently, there's one in England as well, but honestly, who cares about that one... ... ... ... ...); results will come tonight but I've not taken tomorrow off day job so BBS will not be reporting figures live, sorry!

Two Westminster by-elections in Scotland today. Arbroath and Broughty Ferry is on paper the more marginal but in reality the way the vote was divvied up in 2024, with a now re-collapsed Labour then in close second, means it's likely a safer bet for Stephen Gethins' successor as SNP candidate.
