2022 in Review: Parliamentary Polling

2022 started uncomfortably for the Conservatives and has ended miserably for them, as Labour have firmly moved back into second place. The SNP meanwhile experience a mild but typical mid-term slump that nonetheless translates to a majority, whilst the Greens experience a record streak of polling and Lib Dems flirt with a minor recovery.

Poll Analysis: Savanta 16th – 21st of December 2022

One final (hopefully) poll for 2022 bucks recent trends, giving a lead for the Union on the constitutional question and far less pain for the Conservatives than other pollsters.

Poll Analysis (Lite): Panelbase 12th – 16th of December 2022

This is a gap-filler “lite” piece, in line with Ballot Box Scotland’s non-coverage policy for polls where the commissioning outlet has not published standard Holyrood VI at the same time as other VI.

Poll Analysis: YouGov 6th – 9th of December 2022

A fourth poll in a row gives Independence a slender advantage, alongside a projected SNP majority and the worst Holyrood poll of the term so far for the Conservatives.

Poll Analysis: Ipsos 28th of November – 5th of December 2022

A dramatic poll suggest both the highest Independence support since last year’s Holyrood election, and enough support for the SNP to win a mooted “de facto referendum” Westminster election with a vote majority. Strong polling for Labour and the Greens contrasts with yet more evidence of Conservative collapse.

Poll Analysis: ComRes 30th of September – 4th of October 2022

Out of a terrible trio of polls for the Conservatives, ComRes is the least bad, with only a slightly decrease versus the previous Holyrood poll. Nonetheless, Labour continue to make up ground, whilst the Constitution remains utterly immobile.

Poll Analysis: YouGov 30th of September – 4th of October 2022

One of a trio of polls that all appeared at once, this shows the strongest figures for the SNP and weakest for the Conservatives, suggesting a Holyrood majority for the former and complete Westminster wipeout for the latter. Meanwhile, Scots continue to make the constitution dull as dishwater.

Expect this to be the last analysis piece for a Panelbase/Sunday Times poll, unless and until the Sunday Times sort out their bizarre refusal to publicly report Holyrood figures.

Larkhall is a slightly special case, but one of the bits I pick up in here is that whilst Reform beat the SNP and Labour came third, Labour would have beaten both the SNP (by 2%) and Reform (by 2.3%) in a head-to-head, because they were more transfer-attractive here than either party.

    By-Election Result: Larkhall

Reform win their second ever by-election by displacing Labour in one of the most staunchly Pro-Union parts of the country.

I don't know why councils occasionally do this. It's not legal to get up on stage and go "The winning candidate won this many votes, now go away until tomorrow if you want anyone else's figures", so why are they not taking the few extra seconds to add everyone's votes or a photo of the declaration?

By-election underway for South Lanarkshire's Larkhall ward. After having failed one test last week, this is another key test of Reform's electability in a very different type of area they would expect to do well in. If they can't pull off a win, it'll almost certainly be Labour instead.
