SP26 Party Profile: Liberal Democrats

The Lib Dems have had a decade of stagnation in the Scottish Parliament, born of an oddly FPTP-obsessed strategy for a proportional voting system. This time around that approach may actually bear more fruit, especially when paired with positive polling.

SP26 Party Profile: Reform UK

New kids on the block Reform UK are guaranteed to end up with a big group at Holyrood, but it’s unclear whether they will win constituencies or live up to polling overall.

SP26: You’ll have had your MSP then?

With 42 MSPs already retired or deselected, this year’s Holyrood election is all but guaranteed to have the highest turnover in the parliament’s history – but of the 81 MSPs trying to get back in, which are at most risk?

SP26: Scotland’s right-wingers shouldn’t be dismissed or exaggerated

Scotland was for a long time assumed to be resolutely opposed to the right. Whilst Reform’s rise overturns those prior claims, some are overcorrecting their narratives, glossing over a lingering divergence.

Actually, very funny, this is for a piece that boils down to "for the love of the gods can people TRY to understand the Greens, and also some of you stop screaming at me because you don't like the fact I do", and if we go back to *August 2024* I was writing just tremendously foresighted stuff.

I've been slow to finish up some last little bits of post-Holyrood election analysis I wanted to do, as I've understandably been a bit knackered. Edinburgh by-elections due on the 3rd of September. In 2022, Labour beat Greens by 2% after transfers. Given what happened last month, Greens should surely be ahead. If they win, that'd be only their second by-election win ever. Curveball: Lib Dems have a formidable local machine.
